A Clever Swivel Creates More Seating: a look inside

When the current issue of Design New England magazine came out, Paul and I were looking at the two articles showing KR+H's work (read more). As we came to the article "The Long View," and while on story of the kitchen Paul said to me, "There's a kitchen table story not mentioned. I designed a table that stands alone but also swings around to meet the island and extend the banquette's seating." Here's the untold story of that clever table!

You can see Paul's design idea in the two KR+H drawings below. The first kitchen plan shows you how the island's banquette seats 9. The second plan shows the table having done it's clever swing, and voila! now the banquette serves 12!

FIRST DRAWING

This plan shows the banquette allowing seating for 9. The dotted lines that arch from the table to the banquette show the track the table takes to create extra seating.

Here the table has swiveled away from the wall to join with the banquette and now you have seating for 12.

PHOTOS OF THE KITCHEN

Below are photos of the kitchen taken by Eric Roth for Design New England.

The kitchen was designed by KR+H's Karla Monkevich in collaboration with Andra Birkerts Interior and also with some ideas (like the table) in collaboration with KR+H's Paul Reidt.  Their design was brought to life by our wonderfully talented craftspeople.

On this project we were in the terrific company of:
